DOES DEMOCRAT APPROACH TO IDENTITY POLITICS HURT AFRICAN-AMERICANS?

By Kay B. Day
I had a long conversation this weekend with a young woman who is sharp and educated, but held firmly in place by Democrat politics. This is partly a result of history taught in public schools. As we chatted, it became apparent she believed some myths Democrats love to promote.
Among them:
•JFK eagerly promoted civil rights legislation from the time he was in the Senate. [Not.]
•There are no legislators with past ties to the Ku Klux Klan in the Democrat Party. All the racists joined the Republican Party [Not.]
•Democrat policies are consistent with increasing job opportunities for African-Americans in sectors such as landscaping, hotel and lodging, amusement parks and restaurants. [Not.]
•Democrats would never undermine the US Constitution. [Not.]
•The first president to sign civil rights legislation was a Democrat. [Not, and this one is an outright lie taught in most public school history classes.]
•Democrats are the party of the people! They would never cater to special interests. [Not. Check out Goldman Sach’s political contributions dating to the 1990s.]
•There are no black Republicans! [Not.]
What I tried to tell this engaging young woman is that there are no angels in the world of politics. I further explained that the leading proponent of H-2B visas, Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.), is influenced by large employers in landscaping, hotel and lodging, amusement parks and roofing and contractors’ groups. Those employers claim no unskilled Americans will fill jobs in these sectors.
I didn’t try to convert this young woman into a Republican, by the way. I did tell her to think for herself and if someone made a claim—even a history teacher—she should check it out.
I further explained that significant increases in illegal immigrants due to de facto open border policies in both Republican and Democrat administrations have strained entitlements for single mothers and others who rely on government care.
I explained further that much anger towards the GOP comes directly from GOP supporters who are fed up with our ever-expanding federal government that is currently expanding even more under Congressional Democrats and our president. The federal government is concerned about the well-being of those who come into the country illegally.
But the federal government should tell the truth to those who come here legally and to those who need that famous ‘helping hand’ Democrats like to tout. You are in competition with a labor group made up of both legal and illegal workers.
The minute a political party starts talking to you on the basis of your skin color or anyone else’s, you should be aware they are undermining every value those of us who worked for civil rights believe in.
We are all Americans and that is the position a well-intentioned party should take. To take any other path is a dangerous approach because it undermines civil order.
It’s an American right to choose your politics. It’s also a good idea to be informed.
As President Barack Obama appeals to "young people, African-Americans, Latinos, and women who powered our victory in 2008 [to] stand together once again", it would be an honorable thing to tell those same constituencies what identity politics will cost them.
